On Yezidi New Year, SRSG Kubiš Remembers Victims, Calls for Release of Yezidis Held by Daesh

19 April 2017

Baghdad, 19 April 2017 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, extends his warm greetings and best wishes to the Yezidi community in Iraq on the occasion of their new year.

“As you celebrate this important occasion for your community, we remember the victims who perished in Daesh’s atrocities. We also reiterate our call for sparing no effort to secure the release of the women and children who are still held captive and enslaved by the terrorist group”.

Mr. Kubiš said the defeat of Daesh on the battlefront in Ninewah should ensure that the Yezidi minority, which the terrorists particularly singled out in their murderous campaign, will live in a future of safety and security.

“On this occasion of peace and renewal of life, we express hope that the Yezidi community’s unimaginable suffering will come to an end with the demise of Daesh and with a fully liberated Iraq embracing all its communities in peace and harmony”, Mr. Kubiš said.
