SRSG Kubiš Extends Greetings to Sabean Mandaeans on Eid Al-Bronaya

16 March 2017

Baghdad, 16 March 2017 – On the occasion of the Eid Al-Bronaya, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Ján Kubiš, extends his best wishes to the Sabean Mandaean community as they celebrate Eid Al-Bronaya.

“The violence and intimidation against the Sabean Mandaeans by Daesh as well as rogue armed groups and criminal gangs has prompted many members of this ancient community to leave. Our hope is that an atmosphere of tolerance and coexistence will prevail and will encourage them to remain on the land of their ancestors,” Mr. Kubiš said.

The SRSG calls on all political and religious leaders to redouble efforts to promote tolerance, understanding and peaceful coexistence, reiterating UNAMI’s determination to advance reconciliation and coexistence through strengthening cooperation with religious leaders and civil society organisations as well as relevant institutions.

“This is what we are working for and this is the best guarantee for all the components of the Iraqi people,” Mr. Kubiš said.
