SRSG Kubiš on Eid ul-Adha: Iraqis Deserve to Live in Peace
11 September 2016
Baghdad, 11 September 2016 – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ján Kubiš extends his warmest wishes to Muslims across Iraq for a peaceful and joyous Eid ul-Adha.
“As we wish you peace and prosperity on this blessed day, we remember the millions of Iraqis who are suffering, including those who are in displacement camps or still under the tyrannical rule of the terrorist Daesh, and the need to do more to alleviate their hardship,” he stated.
The Eid once again arrives as Iraq continues to be buffeted by cowardly terrorist bombings, resulting in many innocent victims, the SRSG said. More Iraqis are fleeing their homes as the military campaign to liberate areas from Daesh terrorists progresses, adding to the millions of already displaced, and many others are feeling the impact of the security and economic conditions, he added.
“But hopeful days lie ahead”, Mr. Kubiš stressed. “The Government of Iraq is steadily retaking territory from Daesh and asserting State authority,” he said.
“Iraqis have clearly demanded political and economic reforms and an end to corruption that is crippling State building. They have shown impressive resilience and displayed immense strength in the face of the terrorists’ evil drive to ignite sectarian strife,” Mr. Kubiš added.
“To build on these efforts and actions, it is imperative on the Iraqis to engage in serious dialogue culminating in a historic compromise among the country’s diverse components and groups in a spirit of coexistence, tolerance and cooperation that will take Iraq to the future.”
On this Eid, the Feast of Sacrifice that Muslims celebrate worldwide, the Iraqi people who have sacrificed dearly deserve to live in peace, dignity and prosperity, the SRSG concluded.
Eid Mubarak to all.
