SRSG Congratulates Iraq on UNESCO’s Designation of Southern Al-Ahwar Marshlands as World Heritage Site

18 July 2016

Baghdad, 18 July 2016 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubiš, congratulates the Iraqi people and Government on the inscription by UNESCO of the southern Al-Ahwar Marshlands on its World Heritage List.

“This is very good news for Iraq in general and the people of the marshlands in particular,” Mr. Kubiš said. “This ancient land’s rich history is richer today. The latest designation, on top of earlier UNESCO recognition of other historic sites in Iraq, shows that despite the violence the people of Iraq have to endure and the wanton destruction terrorism inflicted on many of its historic sites, this country has preserved its prestigious place on the world heritage map.”
