On the 27 September The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) officially opened an intensive Risk Education Program Management training course that will cover the threats of Mines, explosives, Improvised Explosive Devices, as well as the management of Victim Assistance support.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the 3 weeks’ course will prepare 14 Iraqi officials from the Directorate of Mine Action, within the Ministry of Health and Environment, with risk education management skills.
The training will follow International Mine Action Standards and will enhance the capacities of the Directorate of Mine Action to prepare, plan, implement and manage comprehensive Risk Education Programmes across Iraq. It will specifically assist the national authorities to deliver and monitor effective risk education projects and provide life-saving awareness messages for Iraqi civilians and IDPs returning retaken areas. The training will also include Victim Assistance programme management which will be vital to address the needs of many Iraqis who have been affected by explosive hazards.
UNMAS would like to thank the participants from the Directorate of Mine Action for their participation and express gratitude for their continued commitment to ensuring the safety of Iraqi citizens from the threat of mines and explosives.
