Acting UN Envoy for Iraq welcomes progress in defeating ISIL in Sinjar

15 November 2015

Baghdad, 15 November 2015 - The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG) and Acting Head of Mission, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, welcomed the positive momentum by Kurdish Peshmerga and other forces in defeating ISIL fighters in and around Sinjar in recent days.

“The achievements being made by Iraq’s security forces show that terrorism can be defeated through coordinated efforts”, said Mr. Busztin.

DSRSG Busztin also strongly condemned the deadly suicide attacks that took place in different locations around Baghdad on 13 November. “Such attacks are totally unjustifiable and the perpetrators of such reprehensible acts must be swiftly brought to justice”, he added.

“The progress anti-ISIL forces are making demonstrate that violent extremists’ days in Iraq are numbered. Desperate attempts by the enemies of Iraq to inflict terror and carnage on the Iraqi people will not succeed”, he concluded.
