SRSG applauds peaceful character of demonstrations and protection work of the ISF

30 August 2015

Baghdad, 30 August 2015 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Ján Kubiš expresses his appreciation that the ongoing demonstrations in the central and southern Iraqi provinces have been conducted in a peaceful and dignified manner.

Mr. Kubiš also acknowledges the professional work of Iraqi Security Forces that are responsible for maintaining the peaceful character of the demonstrations, and for the safety of journalists and demonstrators, aimed at preventing violence and provocations by forces that might wish to spark clashes and spread chaos.

This is particularly important since there are reports about ‘unknown entities’ intimidating, harassing, assaulting or threatening with death demonstrators as well as journalists.

“Such reports are disturbing and attempts in this direction must be rejected by demonstrators and all political forces. They must be firmly confronted by the Iraqi Security Forces in full compliance with the relating laws. The authorities must prosecute all persons who try to derail the peaceful demonstrations and prevent journalists from doing their work”, said SRSG Kubiš.
