Press Release

Message from the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, on United Nations Day

24 October 2025

The United Nations turns 80 today. In Iraq, the United Nations family celebrates the birth of this venerable Organization — the symbol of international cooperation and collaboration for the good of all humanity.

This year, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) marks UN Day before concluding its work at the end of 2025, pursuant to a decision of the United Nations Security Council and at the request of the Government of Iraq, after twenty-two years of dedicated and continuous service in support of the Iraqi people and their journey toward peace and stability.

The United Nations Agencies, Funds, and Programmes will continue their work in Iraq, upholding the noble principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations — foremost among them the promotion of peace, security and stability, and the achievement of comprehensive sustainable development throughout Iraq, in a manner that enhances the well-being of the Iraqi people.

On this occasion, we wish everyone a happy United Nations Day, filled with hope and determination to continue working for a world that is more just and humane.
