Good morning, and may the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
It is an honor to represent the United Nations today on behalf of Dr. Mohammed Al-Hassan, who had wished to be here but is unfortunately out of the country. It is also a great privilege for me to stand before this esteemed gathering; leaders from diverse backgrounds who embody Iraq’s rich and vibrant social fabric. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to His Excellency Mr. Qasim al-Araji for hosting this important event, which reaffirms our shared commitment to tolerance, coexistence, and unity.
Iraq is the land of civilizations, where religions, traditions, and cultures have coexisted side by side for centuries. This diversity is not merely a reflection of Iraq’s past but a fundamental pillar of its future. True strength lies not in uniformity but in the ability to embrace differences, foster dialogue, and build a society where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
The challenges Iraq has faced over the past decades have tested the bonds of unity among its people, but at the same time they demonstrated the resilience of its citizens. Iraqis have time and again proven their ability to overcome divisions, reject hatred, and choose the path of reconciliation. Today, more than ever, we must continue working toward a society built on respect, where diversity is a source of strength rather than a cause for division.
Tolerance is not merely the absence of conflict; it is a conscious choice to understand, accept, and coexist. It requires all of us - leaders, institutions, and communities - to cultivate an environment based on mutual respect. It also means ensuring the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnicity, and guaranteeing that no one is marginalized.
Tolerance and equality are not just moral imperatives; they are also essential drivers of sustainable development. Societies that embrace diversity and inclusivity build stronger economies, more resilient communities, and a foundation for lasting peace. Without tolerance, social cohesion cannot be achieved, and without equality, true development remains out of reach. Iraq’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is closely linked to its ability to ensure equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, so they can contribute to and benefit from the country’s prosperity.
The United Nations reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting Iraq in fostering inclusive dialogue, strengthening social cohesion, and advancing policies that uphold the principles of equality and justice for all. We stand with you in building a peaceful and prosperous Iraq - one in which every individual has the opportunity to contribute to its progress.
Thank you.
