UN Human Rights conducted a short film festival on minorities and human rights in Iraq
Basra, Basra International Hotel, 17 July 2019 - UN Human Rights in collaboration with the Palace of Culture and Arts of the Ministry of Culture conducted a short film festival on minorities and human rights in Iraq with 56 men and women from the African descent, Sabean and Christian minority communities, civil society, human rights defenders, novelists, artists, NGOs, media, persons with disabilities and the staff of the Office of Ministry of Culture, sport and youth, and members of the Journalists’ Syndicate and the Bar Association.
Panelists discussed various human rights concerns raised in the short films and others in Basra. Human rights issues highlighted in the films included enforced disappearances, forced marriage, identity and displacement, access to education, and the impact of corruption on rights including the right to life. The was the 34th screening of the films as UN Human Rights Iraq continues to show the best short films on minorities and human rights from the 3By3 Film Festival to audiences across Iraq. The most popular film according to the audience was a Najaf film called Cinderella.
