The People’s Republic of China supports UNHCR’s efforts for Syrian refugees in Iraq

Baghdad, 03 April 2018:The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China visited the UNHCR office in Baghdad today to mark the completion of activities to support Syrian refugees funded by China with a US$ 2 million donation.

The project, implemented in 2016, upgraded essential services in refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Hygiene and sanitation services were improved, as was access to clean water; social and recreational facilities for camp residents were rehabilitated and new staff were trained to manage the camps, including people selected from amongst the refugee population. As a result of these activities, over 98,000 people continue to have access to clean drinking water, and over 1,200 families benefit from new sanitation facilities.

“Together with UNHCR, China has tried to provide protection and assistance to Syrian refugees in Iraq,” said Mr. Chen Weiqing, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Iraq. “We will continue to attach great importance to supporting UNHCR combat the humanitarian crisis.”

Acknowledging the fruitful collaboration between China and UNHCR, Mr. Bruno Geddo, UNHCR Representative in Iraq, said: “Thanks to the generous contribution of the People’s Republic of China, Syrian refugee camps built in 2014 received extensive rehabilitation. People in need now have access to new and upgraded hygiene and sanitation services, and clean water. China’s concern for the wellbeing of Syrian refugees in Iraq is clear. We in UNHCR look forward to continuing to collaborate with China to support Syrian refugees as the conflict continues unabated in their country of origin.”
