SRSG Kubiš Extends Greetings to Sabean Mandaeans on Eid Al-Bronaya (Banja)

15 March 2018

Baghdad, 15 March 2018 – On the occasion of the Eid Al-Bronaya (Banja), the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, extends his warm wishes to the Sabean Mandaean community.

“Our hope is that with the military defeat of Daesh terrorists and the rebirth of Iraqi pride in their unique identity and reiteration of their diversity as a positive element of strength for their country, the Sabean Mandaeans, together with other ethnic and religious groups, will enter a new era that will ensure their lives and work in the conditions of equality, security, dignity and prosperity,” Mr. Kubiš said.

He added that the United Nations has urged the government to take active steps to support and protect minority communities and is working with political and religious leaders to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence as well as national reconciliation. “Peace, stability and rule of law serve to ensure the best interests of all of Iraq’s components. All the components of the Iraqi people, all the ethnic and religious communities, also are called upon to act hand-in-hand to protect their heritage.”
