DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the Political Affairs Officer / Head of Office (Mosul), and the overall guidance of the Director of the Office of Political Affairs and Analysis (OPAA), the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:
• Monitors and analyzes political and related on a wide range of political developments and other issues related to the UNAMI mandate implementation in Ninewa governorate with a view to support political monitoring and activities of the Ninewa Field Office and to provide advice to the OPAA.
• Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant development in the Ninewa governorate; and keeping contact with important political stakeholders in the Provincial council, Civil society, and religious and tribal leaders of the governorate.
• Provides up-to-date information and prepares analytical reports to senior officials through Ninewa Field Office OPAA substantive political matters.
• Analyzes information on political situation in the Ninewa governorate contained in communications and publications received from different sources including the social media and direct sources.
• Assists senior officials through Ninewa Field Office OPAA, by drafting briefing notes, background papers and talking points as well as support high-level visits.
• Creates databases and provide other relevant information on political situation in the Ninewa governorate.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Political Journalism, Law, or related fields. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
- A minimum of two (2) years with a master’s degree or four (4) years with a first level university degree of progressively responsible professional experience in international relations, political analysis, or conflict resolution work at national and international levels, and more specifically in the region of assignment; experience in missions and /or prior work in operations is required.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the UN common system is desirable.
- Excellent drafting skills, report writing, and prepare briefing notes and Note to File in English and Arabic languages are required.
- Experience in data analysis on political and security developments at the national and regional levels is desirable.
- Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic languages is required.
