UN’s Kubiš Eid-ul-Fitr Greetings to Iraqis: Days of Terrorist Daesh Are Numbered and Peace will Prevail

25 June 2017

Baghdad, 25 June 2017 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, extends his warmest greetings and wishes for peace and prosperity to the Iraqi people in general and Muslims in particular on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“What makes the advent of the Eid this year more promising is the imminent demise of Daesh and the triumph of Iraq over their so-called Caliphate. Most areas of Mosul have been liberated and the terrorists are being hunted down in their last few remaining pockets, their days numbered. But we remain deeply concerned about the civilians who remain trapped by the fighting or held as human shields by the terrorists,” Mr. Kubiš said.

The SRSG saluted the sacrifices Iraqis of all backgrounds have made in the fight against terrorism.

“On this blessed Eid, we remember the civilian victims of terrorism and the members of the Iraqi Security Forces, the Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces who gave their lives in the fight to defeat the terrorists. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and our sympathy and solidarity are with those who are suffering from their injuries and the millions who have fled their homes and towns, many of whom are celebrating the Eid in displacement camps,” he said.

Mr. Kubiš noted that Ramadan, the holy month of prayers, contemplation and compassion for Muslims which preceded Eid-ul-Fitr, was marred this year by terrorist bombings that have claimed many civilian lives. “Iraq deserves peace, and national reconciliation is key to a lasting one. I am confident that Iraqis will celebrate next year’s Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr in peace and harmony,” he said.

"I wish you all Eid Mubarak."
