UNAMI launches the first phase of its Human Rights Education Project

Erbil, 27 December 2016 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), in coordination with the Kurdistan Region in Iraq Ministry of Education (MOE), Independent Board of Human Rights (IBHR) and the Ministry of Endowment & Religious Affairs organized the final meeting of the steering committee formed to review the curriculum of religious education and knowledge of religions for secondary education in Kurdistan.

The meeting took place in Erbil on 26 December and included representatives from MOE, IBHR, the High Council for Women's Affairs, UNESCO, the Forum of Islamic Thought, as well as representatives of relevant non-governmental organizations and academics.

At this meeting the committee reached its final conclusions, recommendations and comments on the development of the curriculum of religious education and knowledge of religions subjects.

UNAMI Human Rights Office and representatives of the steering committee then met with Dr. Pishtiwan Sadiq, Minister of Education, and discussed the outcome of the committee’s work. The steering committee’s study, including a summary work plan focusing on developing religious education was presented to the Minister. The Minister welcomed the study and committed to have it reviewed by relevant committees in the Ministry for further consideration.
