Promotion of Women’s Right through Art: A celebration of artistic expression in Iraq - Opening remarks by Danielle Bell, Chief, UNAMI Human Rights Office

Today, we gather to celebrate the power of creativity and artistic expression in advancing women’s rights.

Throughout history, art has been a powerful tool for social change.

When it comes to promoting women's rights, arts have been instrumental in raising awareness, building solidarity, challenging societal norms, and promoting positive change towards gender equality.

Today, the Human Rights Office of UNAMI is honored to engage with a diverse group of artists who are using their talents to advocate for women’s rights through their work.

Artists have a unique ability to express complex ideas and emotions in a way that resonates with people on a deeper level.

Art has the power to challenge stereotypes and prejudices against women and girls, and help people understand different perspectives.

Together let us explore how art can be used as a tool for social change in the promotion and protection of women’s rights, including in the advocacy to combat violence against women and girls.

As we continue to work towards a more just and equal society, let us use the power of art to create a more inclusive society, to create space for dialogue and engagement, and challenge stereotypes and biases that contribute to gender inequality.

I hope that today's event will inspire us all to use our voices and our creativity to advocate for a more just and equitable society.
