SRSG Kubiš on the reported withdrawal of Turkish troops from camp Bashiqa

Baghdad, 15 December 2015 - The Special Representative of the Secretary General to Iraq, Jan Kubiš, takes note of the reports of withdrawal of Turkish troops from Bashiqa camp following the visit to Baghdad on 10 December 2015 of the Special Envoys of the Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglou, that reconfirmed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq. The UN Secretary-General has urged all Member States involved in the fight against ISIL in Iraq to do so in a manner that is in line with the Charter of the United Nations and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.

“The reported withdrawal of Turkish military personnel and equipment out of camp Bashiqa that should be followed by additional steps and measures, opens the door towards moving past this incident” Kubiš said. He urges both sides to establish expeditiously a coordinating mechanism that will enable the deepening of cooperation in the field of security and continuous support to Iraq in fighting ISIL based on consultations with and full consent of the Government Iraq.



While taking note with full respect of the fact that the Government of Iraq has decided to refer the issue to the attention and action of the UN Security Council, SRSG Kubiš is encouraged by repeated reassurances from both sides of their interest to resolve the issue through dialogue and is encouraged to note that such dialogue continues.
