SRSG, Ad Melkert, welcomes the results of the Council of Representatives election

Baghdad, 1 June 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert, welcomed the decision announced today by the Federal Supreme Court, certifying the results of the Council of Representatives election, held on 7 March 2010, in accordance with the Constitution of Iraq. He described it as a crucial step towards the formation of a government that will shape the country’s future for the next four years.
The SRSG now encourages Iraqi leaders to move swiftly and work together to complete the formation of the new government through an inclusive process. In this regard, it is of great importance that the new Council of Representatives convenes as soon as possible as stipulated in the constitution.
