Newly Appointed SRSG Martin Kobler Arrives in Baghdad

Baghdad, 8 October 2011- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mr. Martin Kobler, has arrived today to the Mission’s Headquarters in Baghdad to take up his duties.

“I am privileged to be here to contribute to serving and assisting Iraq and its people at a time when the country is going through an important phase in its transition towards a peaceful and prosperous state,” SRSG Kobler said upon his arrival.

 

“I am very much  looking forward to working closely with the Iraqi Government, the Council of Representatives, state institutions and Iraqi civil society, together with the United Nations family in Iraq,   in the fulfillment of our mandate in support of Iraq and its people’s aspirations for a better future,” he added.  “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by the UN Secretary-General to serve in this important function as head of UNAMI,” SRSG Kobler said.

 

Mr. Kobler, of Germany, was officially appointed by the UN Secretary-General as his Special Representative for Iraq and Head of UNAMI on 11 August 2011.

 

He replaces Mr. Ad Melkert of the Netherlands who served in Iraq from July 2009 to August 2011.
