The reports present findings on heinous international crimes committed against victims and survivors from Shi’a, Sunni, Yazidi, and other Iraqi communities
10 September 2024, Baghdad: During their final meeting prior to UNITAD’s closure, Acting Special Adviser Ana Peyró Llopis delivered eight reports and packages of underlying evidence, including evidence originally collected by UNITAD, to H.E. Faiq Zeidan, President of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). The reports present findings of acts committed by ISIL (Da’esh) between 2014 and 2017 against victims from wide-ranging communities of Iraqi society, which UNITAD has reasonable grounds to believe amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and, in some cases, genocide.
Six of the reports present factual and legal findings on atrocities committed by ISIL (Da’esh) in the following geographic regions and / or against the following communities of Iraq: The Albu Nimr tribe of Anbar; the Yazidis of Sinjar; predominantly Shi’a victims from Badush Prison; and members of the minority Kaka’i, Shabak and Turkmen communities. In addition, two reports analyzing the contextual elements of crimes against humanity and the legal characterization of the armed conflict against ISIL (Da’esh) were also shared.
“Today marks the single biggest delivery of the results of UNITAD’s investigations to Iraq, in accordance with our mandate and our Terms of Reference”, said the Acting Special Adviser. “In sharing these eight reports and underlying evidence, I would like to highlight the strong support from H.E. Faiq Zeidan, the SJC and all members of the Iraqi judiciary who have made instrumental contributions to UNITAD’s work, including by sharing information of immense value for our investigations. For this, I speak on behalf of the whole Investigative Team in expressing our heartfelt thanks. As a result of this excellent cooperation, by 17 September 2024, UNITAD will have delivered to the SJC 19 case assessments and analytical reports, together with materials originally produced and collected by the Team. Over the past three months, 14 reports were delivered.”
“It is also the time to recall that our work ultimately serves the interest of the victims, survivors and communities impacted by the crimes of ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq; women, men and children who endured the horrendous cruelty of ISIL (Da’esh), which is described in the reports. What happened should be remembered, and never happen again. We remain hopeful that the information UNITAD has analyzed and enhanced in a processed and structured archive, and the findings it has delivered to the Iraqi authorities will contribute to accountability for ISIL’s (Da’esh) crimes in Iraq and globally. There are still stories to be told, survivors to be heard, and perpetrators to be held accountable.”
