UNAMI Human Rights Office held a roundtable discussion on the prevention of domestic violence
Baghdad, 5 November 2024 - UNAMI Human Rights Office held a roundtable discussion on the prevention of domestic violence.
Participants included representatives from the National Directorate for Iraqi Women, the Ministry of Interior Family and Child Protection Directorate, the community police, Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR), representatives of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, journalists and lawyers.
The discussions were structured around the recommendations contained in UNAMI/OHCHR’s public report “Accountability for Domestic Violence: Promoting Justice and Non-Discrimination” issued earlier this year.
Domestic violence is one of the most insidious forms of discrimination that significantly hinders women's enjoyment of their rights and freedoms.
The roundtable event provided an opportunity for those actively engaged in preventing domestic violence and ensuring protection for survivors, to exchange practical ideas and discuss how to best to address these critical issues in a coordinated and collaborative way.
