UNAMI Human Rights Office training on “Strengthening knowledge and skills for monitoring detention facilities and prisons in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq”

Erbil, 4 December 2024 – The Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) organized a training titled “Strengthening knowledge and skills for monitoring detention facilities and prisons in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq”. 

This training was specifically designed for staff of the Detention and Rule of Law Department of the Independent High Commission for Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.  

Eleven staff of the IHCHR-KRI benefitted from the training on monitoring techniques for assessing prison conditions, including the use of checklists and observation methods aligned with international best practices, and the human rights of detainees. 

Participants also received training on comprehensive report writing on conditions of detainees and prisons and conducting effective   advocacy in promoting due process of the law and respect for the rights of detainees. 

The training also enhanced the monitoring and reporting skills of participants on wider human rights issues.
