Sharya Camp, Duhok Governorate, Iraq - Highlighting the plight of displaced Yazidis on the 11th anniversary of the ISIL/Daesh onslaught on the community and eight years after the terrorists’ military defeat, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, visited a camp of Yazidi IDPs in Duhok Governorate.
Decrying the living conditions of the IDPs, the Special Representative called for action to end the plight of the Yazidi community so that they resume their normal life.
“This is not a stable life”, Dr. Al Hassan said. “No Iraqi and no official accept that this situation continues,” he emphasized after a tour of the camp, calling on the authorities to look positively at improving conditions.
Yazidis were among the communities that suffered the most from Daesh’s atrocities. Today, more than 200,000 Yazidis remain displaced, many still living in camps. Others have returned, but without sufficient services and additional support they need to return to normal lives. And there are still some 2,600 missing Yazidis.
The ultimate goal, he added, is for the dignified, voluntary and safe return of the IDPs home to the Sinjar district, Ninewa Governorate.
