On 29 October 2018, Deputy Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ms. Alice Walpole, accompanied by UNESCO Country Director Louise Haxthausen, paid a visit to Kocho village, south of Sinjar, to meet survivors of the August 2014 Da’esh massacre, visit Kocho’s mass grave sites and discuss proposals for a memorial in the town’s school. Sheikh Nayif Jassim, Mukhtar of Kocho and head of the Mandakan tribe, underlined his community’s demands for a scrupulous criminal investigation into the dreadful events that took place in Kocho, and called for forensic exhumation of the village’s mass graves.
