UNAMI condemns in the strongest terms the two terrorist bombings in Baghdad

29 August 2017

Baghdad, 29 August 2017 – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG), Gyorgy Busztin, condemns in the strongest terms the two terrorist bombings in Baghdad on Monday, 28 August 2017, that resulted in numerous casualties.

Two blasts occurred - an improvised explosive device (IED) at al-Yusufiya region, in south of Baghdad, and a car exploded at Jamila region, located in Sadr city, in east of Baghdad.

The DSRSG extends his sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured speedy recovery.

“The great victories of the Iraqi people in Mosul and Tal Afar are showing that the end of the so-called D’aesh is close. However, these desperate attempts of the terrorists are manifesting that the battle is not over and that it is still claiming numerous innocent lives,” said DSRSG Busztin.

Mr. Busztin reiterates that the United Nations will continue to stand by the Government and people of Iraq in their efforts to fight terrorism and hopes that perpetrators of these outrages will be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
