Baghdad, Iraq, 25 April 2016 – Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Ján Kubiš met today with President of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Fuad Masoum, and discussed his Excellency’s efforts to find a solution to the current impasse in the Council of Representatives.

The SRSG briefed the President on his consultations with different political groups. He encouraged Iraq’s political groups to find a political solution based on the Constitution, law and principles of democracy soon that will put an end to the split and paralysis of the parliament and pave the way to enacting rapidly the necessary reforms and anti-corruption measures and to the smooth functioning of State institutions.

The SRSG said that the United Nations is ready to facilitate such efforts, if needed and requested by the parties.

“Throughout my consultations with various Iraqi interlocutors, I sensed a growing understanding that the parliamentary impasse and the political crisis have an increasingly negative impact on the country as it attempts to tackle the enormous security, political, humanitarian and economic challenges”, Mr. Kubiš said.
