UN Envoy Strongly condemns assassination of Al-Sharqiya journalists

Baghdad, 12 January 2016 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubiš, strongly condemned the assassination of two journalists from Al-Sharqiya Television in Diyala Province.
“The assassination of Saif Talal and Hassan Al-Anbaki while they were carrying out their duty of reporting events in Diyala is by all accounts a despicable and cowardly act by those who do not want the truth to be told,” Mr. Kubiš said.
“I call upon the authorities to speedily apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice, and to do its utmost in protecting journalists while carrying out their duty” added the SRSG.
“My condolences go to their bereaved families, friends and colleagues,” Kubiš further added.
