Baghdad-Monday, 22 December 2008 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq Staffan de Mistura condemned the reported assassination of the Kirkuk based woman advocate Calwiz-Nahla Hussein on Thursday, 18 December. Mr. de Mistura described the assassination as a, "heinous crime that underscores the urgent need for addressing the issue of violence against women in Iraq."
The SRSG urged all Iraqi authorities, political components and concerned civil society groups in the country to give the issue of protecting women\'s rights in Iraq as stated in the constitution, the critical priority it deserves.
Mr. de Mistura had met on Wednesday 17 December with a group of Kirkuk women who shared with him their concerns with regards to their rights. He assured them of the United Nations\' commitment to women\'s rights.
