The SRSG condemns in the strongest terms the suicide bomb attack at a condolence house

24 March 2009

Baghdad, 24 March 2009 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Staffan de Mistura condemned in the strongest terms the suicide bomb attack that killed and injured dozens at a house filled with Kurdish funeral mourners in the town of Jalawla in Diyala province.

The SRSG expressed great concern that this attack in an especially sensitive province may further ethnic tensions. The SRSG urges all communities to "show restraint at this difficult time, and to avoid responding to this appalling provocation in the way that the extremists and killers are clearly hoping for".

The SRSG extends the United Nations’ most sincere condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for full and speedy recovery for the wounded.
