SRSG Ad Melkert Condemns the Series of Heinous Bombings in Baghdad

Baghdad, 5 April 2010 — The Special Representative of the United Nations-Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert strongly condemned the series of bombing that struck Baghdad yesterday killing dozens of innocent civilians and injuring many more.

Mr. Melkert described the bombings as, “A senseless crime that targeted civilians and diplomats in Baghdad.” Amongst those killed was an Iraqi United Nations staff member, working for the World Health Organization along with her 20 year old son.

The SRSG urges all communities to work towards further strengthening national reconciliation as the best approach to serve the interests of the overwhelming majority of Iraqis that are committed to peace, fundamental rights, and strive for democracy", he emphasized.

Mr. Melkert expressed the United Nations’ sorrow and sincere condolences to the bereaved families and its wishes for full and speedy recovery for the wounded.
