15 August 2011
Baghdad, 15 August 2011 -- The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ad Melkert, strongly condemns today’s series of terrorist attacks in a number of cities across Iraq, which have claimed the lives of dozens of victims and wounded many more. He extends his condolences to the families of the victims as well as the Government of Iraq and his wishes for the full and speedy recovery for the injured.
SRSG Melkert deplores the deliberate targeting of security forces and locations where civilians congregate, including near places of worship especially during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He says the international community and Iraq’s friends around the world were hoping this month would show more progress towards achieving peace and stability
The SRSG calls on all Iraqis to reflect on the values of tolerance and respect for human life. In this difficult time, he urges Iraq’s people to unite and remain steadfast in their continued effort towards coexistence, democracy and reconstruction.
