The Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) organized one-day workshop on “Strengthening Legislative and Institutional Measures to Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change on Human Rights” in collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government. The event was attended by 29 participants (11 females and 18 males) from KRG ministries, directorates, and relevant departments.
The workshop aimed at establishing a climate network between the authorities and civil society organizations to advocate for the development of human rights-based climate change policies and legislation for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The participants proposed concrete measures and an action plan to mitigate the impact of climate change on human rights.
Ms. Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the KRG Prime Minister’s Senior Advisor for Foreign Relations and Climate Change, and the head of UNAMI Human Rights Office in Erbil, Mr. Zafeer Ud Din, welcomed the joint efforts by UNAMI and the Kurdistan Regional Government to promote the protection of human rights from the impact of climate change.
