“When given the opportunity, all persons with disabilities can excel and reach their full potential."
Today, we celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and International Volunteer Day (IVD) at the UN Compound in Baghdad! The event was attended by the Executive Director of the High Council of Youth Mr. Ali Helal Khalaf.
In his opening remarks, DSRSG/RC/HC Ghulam Isaczai emphasized the UN commitment to continue to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities as part of building an inclusive society where everyone can thrive – “When given the opportunity, all persons with disabilities can excel and reach their full potential."
This year’s IDPD theme, “Leadership and Resilience,” strikes a chord in Iraq - a country where decades of conflict have left many with disabilities. While steps have been taken, we must do more to ensure inclusive policies that empower everyone to participate and thrive.
The event was filled with inspiration! From a heartfelt group rendition of the Iraqi national anthem in sign language to a moving musical performance by a talented artist with disabilities, every moment celebrated resilience and creativity.
The open-air gallery of artwork by young persons with disabilities was a powerful showcase of their talent, determination, and ability to inspire us all.
Let’s champion diversity, amplify unheard voices, and work together for a future where everyone can lead, serve, and shine.
