IHCHR Event to mark International Human Rights Day Remarks by Mr Rupert White, Acting Head of UNAMI Human Rights Office

Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Thank-you for the opportunity to be with you today for this important commemoration.

International Human Rights Day commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all of us are entitled. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere, without distinction based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language, or any other status.

Today the acceptance by all United Nations Member States of the basic Human Rights laid down in the Universal Declaration emphasizes the relevance of Human Rights in our daily lives.

Human Rights Day 2024 invites us all to unite under the theme of “Our Rights. Our Future. Right Now.”  

What does this slogan mean in practice? It means that human rights are not just abstract ideas but they affect everyone, every day.  The principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have real-life relevance and play an essential role as a preventive, protective, and transformative force to change the life of all Iraqis for the better. 

Human Rights are the common thread that binds us all together to foster peace and stability.  By establishing, recognising and adhering to a common set of values and principles that apply universally, human rights help to avoid violations, conflicts and abuses before they happen. 

Human rights are not merely abstract ideas. They offer concrete norms, laws and a vital framework that protects against abuses, violations and other harms, ensuring everyone, everywhere can live in dignity and respect.    

Human Rights are a powerful force for good. Upholding, and promoting human rights isn’t only about addressing present injustices, it’s about encouraging all of us to take action to support human rights initiatives and join together to create a fairer and more equal future. 

Across the world, national human rights institutions such as the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) play a crucial role in promoting and monitoring the effective implementation of international human rights standards at the national level and United Nations human rights supports the effective implementation of the IHCHR’s independent mandates to promote and protect human rights.

Together, we hold the power to build a future based on freedom, justice and peace. That power comes from human rights.
