The day commenced with a spirited Sports Parade, led by Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Warrant Officer Class One (WOI) Wara, and was attended by the Contingent Commander (CONTICO) and Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Colonel Naivalu.
In the afternoon, Ms. Downey was welcomed by an impressive all-female Quarter Guard, led by Sergeant Matanisigadrau. She inspected the guards, recognizing their professionalism and discipline, before joining the contingent for an evening of camaraderie and cultural exchange. The dinner, prepared by the FGU, provided an opportunity for the women to introduce themselves, share their personal experiences, and discuss the challenges and triumphs they’ve faced in the mission area.
Lieutenant Colonel Naivalu thanked Ms. Downey for accepting the FGU's invitation and presented her with a memento from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) as a token of appreciation. He also commended all the women for their positive contributions to the mission, acknowledging their vital role in promoting peace and stability.
The celebration concluded with a powerful collective agreement: women have the power to drive positive change wherever they serve. Echoing the sentiment that women "hold up half the sky," the FGU emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive and empowering environment for all.
This year’s International Women’s Day served as a reminder of the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of women in peacekeeping — and the continued commitment to accelerating progress through unity and empowerment.
