Ladies and Gentlemen,It is an honor to be part of today’s event marking World Population Day in Iraq. This important occasion brings together esteemed leaders and stakeholders to not only mark this significant day but also to officially launch the UNFPA 2025 State of World Population Report in Iraq, which this year addresses the critical issue of fertility and offers an opportunity to reflect on Iraq’s population policies in the context of profound demographic shifts. your presence here today reflects a shared commitment to addressing the opportunities and challenges of our time.

. As Iraq stands at a demographic crossroads, with a significant youth population and evolving fertility trends, it is more important than ever to engage in an informed and forward-looking dialogue. We look forward to promoting solutions that ensure reproductive agency becomes a policy priority, empowering individuals and couples to make their own informed choices about their families and their futures. We commend the Government of Iraq for its ongoing efforts to develop and implement population policies that are responsive to the needs of its people and that lay the groundwork for sustainable development.

This includes support for people’s fertility aspirations, the empowerment of women and youth, and ensuring all policies are grounded in comprehensive demographic data and a firm commitment to human rights. Our support is fully aligned with the Iraq National Development Plan and with the Government's dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, as highlighted in the priorities of the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2025-2029.
