Baghdad, Iraq
Dr. Bradley J. Cook, President of the American University of Iraq – Baghdad,
Distinguished Guests, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a true honor to be with you today as we gather for a pivotal moment in the global climate dialogue. Together, we will watch a speech by the UN Secretary-General - a message that will be broadcasted around the world in a collective call to awaken humanity to the urgency of the climate crisis.
The speech, aptly titled "A Moment of Opportunity," could not be timelier. Indeed, this is our opportunity - not only to raise awareness about climate change, but also to reflect on our individual and collective responsibilities toward our planet. It is a moment to consider the actions each of us must take - from small changes in our daily habits to the larger, systemic policy shifts needed to ensure a sustainable future for all.
The Secretary-General’s speech is not just a call to action - it is a call to ambition. It reframes climate action not as a burden, but as a powerful opportunity for economic transformation and sustainable development. This message is particularly relevant for Iraq, which is already facing the severe impacts of climate change - from water scarcity and desertification to rising temperatures and displacement.
Although Iraq is one of the richest countries in fossil fuels, its abundance of solar energy - with over 300 days of sunshine a year - presents a compelling opportunity. Investing in renewables can help address the country’s energy challenges while positioning Iraq as a regional leader in the transition to clean energy.
Today’s event is a collaborative effort between the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, UNESCO, UNAMI, and AUIB. It reflects our shared commitment to fostering inclusive dialogue, engaging youth, and amplifying the voices of those who will shape Iraq’s climate future.
We are especially proud to host this event at AUIB, a center of academic excellence and youth leadership. The involvement of the AUIB Green Club and the UN Youth Advisory Council ensures that this is not just a conversation among experts, but a platform for intergenerational exchange and civic engagement.
Let me take this opportunity to thank our partners, panelists, and all participants for joining us today. Your presence signals a growing momentum for climate ambition in Iraq -one that is rooted in cooperation, innovation, and hope.
The United Nations stands ready to support Iraq in advancing its climate goals, exploring climate-driven opportunities, strengthening resilience, and ensuring that climate action becomes a pathway to prosperity for all Iraqis.
Thank you.
