14 September 2024, Baghdad: On 10 September 2024, as part of the completion of its activities prior to its closure on 17 September 2024, UNITAD delivered to the Supreme Judicial Council, among other documents, the report on international crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) against members of the Albu Nimr tribe in al-Anbar governorate. The report and its underlying evidence have been shared in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) and UNITAD’s Terms of Reference, including the informed consent of information providers.

Factual and legal assessment of acts committed by ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq during the attack on Badush Central Prison on 10 June 2014
14 September, Baghdad: As part of the completion of its activities prior to its closure, UNITAD has published a report setting out detailed findings on international crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) during its attack on Badush Central Prison near Mosul on 10 June 2014. It is estimated that 1,000 male prisoners – predominantly Shi’a, but also a few Sunni, Yazidi and Christian – were executed by ISIL (Da’esh) members in at least six locations on this day. With the support of UNITAD, and as of the date of the report, the remains of over 600 victims have been excavated as part of these investigations, in co-operation with the Mass Graves Directorate and Medico-Legal Directorate of Iraq.

Baghdad - As UNITAD concludes its mandate on 17 September 2024, the Team highlights the crucial role it played in promoting global accountability efforts for atrocity crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) and advancing justice for the victims of ISIL (Da’esh) crimes throughout the world, notably through the support of domestic efforts in third States.
16 September 2024, Baghdad - As part of the completion of its activities prior to its closure on 17 September 2024, UNITAD delivered, among others, a report on crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) against the Christian community of Iraq to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on 26 August 2024. The report, which focuses on Christians located in or around Mosul and the Nineveh Plains, concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that international crimes were committed against members of this community between 2014 and 2017.
