UNAMI will to continue to support the efforts of both the Government of Iraq and the KRG to promote and protect the rights of all persons.
Sulaymaniyah, Iraq – Iraq’s Human Rights National Action Plan (2020 – 2024 / HRNAP) was launched in an event organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Justice for the Kurdistan Region, civil society organisations and the participation of UNAMIs Human Rights Office (HRO). The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) mentioned that it would also be launching its human rights plan for the region soon.
Mr. Salar Abdulsattar, Minister of Justice, highlighted in his opening remarks that the HRNAP was officially adopted by the Council of Ministers on 23 March 2021 and aims to address recommendations endorsed by the Government of Iraq during its most recent Universal Periodic Review. In particular he affirmed that one of the main goals of the plan is to ensure that national legislation is in compliance with international human rights treaties.
Dr. Dindar Zebari, the Coordinator for International Advocacy for the KRG said that HRNAP would be used as a basis for the KRG’s human rights plan.
He stressed that the KRG human rights plan would be prepared in coordination with the Independent Board for Human Rights, UNAMI HRO and civil society in the Kurdistan Region.
