Kirkuk, 8 March 2022 – Kirkuk’s rich cultural diversity was on full display today as youth in colourful traditional costumes sang and danced,
students displayed their art and poets recited their work to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The event, organized by the House of Culture, in cooperation with the Directorate for Youth and Sport and the Directorate for Education (Women Empowerment Section), was also attended by a delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Culture as well as representatives of the UNAMI Kirkuk Office.
The event began with an exhibition of art works by students of the Kirkuk Arts Academy and other local artists. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the exhibition by students from the Kirkuk Arts Academy, the Director of the House of Culture, Yousuf Taieb, congratulated all women of Iraq on International Women’s Day. A minute’s silence to honour the martyrs of violence in Iraq, particularly the women among then, followed. Then the audience was treated to a colourful program of performances by Kirkuk artists, including female Kirkuki poets Munawar Molla Hassun and Thekrayat al-Obaidi, followed by song and dance performed by a Kirkuki youth group in traditional costumes.
