31 July 2024
Baghdad, 30 July 2024 – The Government of Iraq and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Iraq convened a meeting of the Joint Technical Committee on the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2025-2029) at the Ministry of Planning in Baghdad today. Senior officials and technical experts from UN agencies, funds, and programmes joined officials from the Ministry of Planning, relevant ministries, and national institutions for a detailed briefing outlining the structure and content of the UNSDCF, including its strategic priorities and outcome indicators. The meeting reviewed the progress made in designing the framework and included detailed discussions that provided further input to the document and determined the way forward. The UNSDCF will chart the partnership between the Government of Iraq and the United Nations in Iraq from 2025 to 2029.
Resident Coordinator, Mr. Ghulam M. Isaczai, welcomed the convening of the second JTC meeting to review the progress of the UNSDCF (2025-2029) process, which is aligned with the priorities stipulated by the National Development Plan. He further commended “the partnership between the UNCT in Iraq with government institutions, civil society and international development partners in developing the Cooperation Framework," adding that "this is crucial in addressing Iraq’s development objectives and moving towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."
Dr. Maher Hamad Johan, the Deputy of the Ministry of Planning for Technical Affairs, said: "The purpose of the cooperation framework with the United Nations is to serve as a high-level, multi-year strategic planning framework to guide the collective work of UN organizations. It also aims to establish a comprehensive partnership between the government and the United Nations, clarifying the mechanism of support provided for the priorities of the national development plan by focusing on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals."
Such engagement is significant as the feedback on the document strengthens the UN partnership with the Government, reflects Iraq’s priorities and aspirations, and informs international development partners.
