UNITAD Delivers Four Investigative Reports on Crimes Committed by Da’esh(ISIL) to the Supreme Judicial Council

26 August 2024

The reports present findings on core investigations into heinous international crimes committed against the Christians of Iraq as well as victims in Tikrit, al-Alam, al-Dour and al-Dhuluiya

26 August 2024, Baghdad: On behalf of UNITAD, Ms. Defne Akça, Chief of Investigations, delivered four reports presenting the findings of investigations into acts committed by ISIL (Da’esh) that may amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), along with a package of underlying evidence for each, including evidence originally collected by UNITAD.

The reports present findings of atrocities committed by Da’esh (ISIL) against victims from wide-ranging communities of Iraqi society, during the terrorist group’s occupation of large parts of Iraq between 2014 and 2017.

In addition to internal analytical work products on the military structure of ISIL (Da’esh) and its Delegated Committee, the delivered reports detail acts which UNITAD has reasonable grounds to believe amount to international crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) against the Christians of Iraq, as well as victims in Tikrit, al-Alam, al-Dour and al-Dhuluiya.

Acting Special Adviser and Head of UNITAD, Ms. Ana Peyró Llopis, noted in a statement that “The reports and underlying evidence delivered today underscore that crimes committed by ISIL (Da’esh) in Iraq affected various Iraqi communities. The delivery of UNITAD’s factual and legal assessments and underlying evidence collected by UNITAD is a critical contribution towards domestic efforts to hold ISIL (Da’esh) accountable. Today we have taken another step towards fulfilling our mandate in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolution 2379 (2017) and UNITAD’s Terms of Reference, before its closure on 17 September 2024.”
