The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, which concluded 22 November 2024, was an opportunity for Iraq to significantly contribute to global climate discussions and advance its national priorities on building climate resilience. Supported by UN agencies through enhancing capacities and logistical support, Iraq highlighted its efforts toward resilience and a green transformation, reinforcing its dedication to a sustainable future.
Iraq’s pavilion: Showcasing innovation and collaboration
For the second consecutive year, Iraq hosted its own pavilion at the COP29. During the pavilion’s inauguration, President Abdul Latif Rashid emphasized its role as a platform for fostering international collaboration to achieve shared climate goals. The pavilion featured over 40 side events highlighting innovative climate initiatives across Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, such as advancement in low-carbon technologies, water resource management, and strategies for a green economic transition. Iraq used this platform to highlight its progress in National Adaptation Plans to combat extreme heat, desertification, and water scarcity. These measures align with broader regional goals for sustainable resource management and reflect Iraq’s commitment to supporting its most vulnerable communities.
Iraq’s negotiation team: Promoting progress on Paris Agreement goals
Iraq’s negotiation team, trained with UN support, played an important role in advancing discussions to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, including finalizing the agreement on Article 6 regarding carbon markets. The team’s efforts emphasized the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, advocating for equitable climate financing, and strengthening resilience against climate-induced challenges.
Empowering Iraq’s youth: Leading the charge at COP29
With support from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Kurdistan Regional Government, and UN agencies, young delegates served as the voice of Iraq’s future at COP29. They brought forward innovative ideas and practical solutions to the global climate dialogue, reflecting the aspirations of the country’s youth. Beyond their active participation in the Iraqi pavilion, these young leaders conducted sessions across various pavilions, spotlighting Iraq’s potential in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation. Their contributions underscored the critical importance of empowering youth to lead and take ownership of climate action.
