Baghdad, 13 January 2025 – Recognizing the critical role civil society plays in promoting women’s empowerment, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr. Mohamed Al Hassan, met today with members of the Women Advisory Group and representatives of Civil Society Organizations to discuss a number of priorities for Iraqi women and how the UN can support progress on this important file.

He emphasized the need to ensure that proposed legislations safeguard women’s rights and that women participate fully in decision-making processes.
Dr. Al Hassan also affirmed that the United Nations remains engaged, and will continue to support the Government of Iraq and civil society in ensuring progress towards the full realization of Iraq’s commitments to the protection and empowerment of women and girls across the country, in line with the Government’s vision and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
