UNAMI Human Rights Office organizes a Roundtable discussion to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025

FOR ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS: RIGHTS. EQUALITY. EMPOWERMENT
Erbil, 6 March 2025 – The Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) organized a Roundtable discussion in Erbil to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025. The event was attended by 18 participants (11 women and 7 men) representing the Kurdistan Regional Government, civil society, the Independent Human Rights Commission-KRI, UN WOMEN and UNFPA.
Participants renewed commitment to protecting women’s rights under this year’s theme “FOR ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS: RIGHTS. EQUALITY. EMPOWERMENT” and discussed achievements, challenges and measures necessary to accelerate progress in realizing the true potential of women and girls and in enhancing their meaningful participation in all spheres of life, including education, health, governance, and decision-making.
Participants emphasized the importance of strengthening the rule of law and justice sector's institutions to protect women from violence and to ensure accountability. They also discussed the need for enhancing women’s role in promoting social cohesion and peaceful co-existence, countering hate speech against women and placing special emphasis on the protection of women from Iraqi societal components and their socio-economic upliftment.
The event offered an opportunity to strengthen collaboration and dialogue amongst key stakeholders to enhance collective efforts for the empowerment of women and girls in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
