Statement by the United Nations’ Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ghulam Isaczai, on World Humanitarian Day
19 August 2024
19 August 2024, Baghdad – Today, we join the global community in commemorating World Humanitarian Day, a time to honor and pay tribute to the selfless humanitarian workers who dedicate their lives to serving humanity.
This day also marks a somber anniversary for Iraq. Two decades ago, on 19 August 2003, the Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian aid workers and left many others injured. The United Nations and the larger humanitarian community in Iraq remained steadfast in the face of this tragedy, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and the well-being of the Iraqi people. Over the past 20 years, this dedication has played a crucial role in the country's journey toward sustainable solutions and progress. Our collective efforts with the Government of Iraq have significantly impacted the lives of the Iraqi people, particularly the internally displaced populations. Today, majority of the IDPs have returned to their homes, a testament to the resilience of the Iraqi people and the dedication of those who have worked tirelessly to support them. We continue to work with our government partners to find durable solutions for the remaining IDPs and refugees.
While Iraq has emerged from some of its most challenging periods, we remain mindful of the broader regional and global security concerns that continue to affect the humanitarian landscape. However, the situation in Iraq today stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, recovery and progress are possible.
On this World Humanitarian Day, we stand in unwavering solidarity with our fellow humanitarians and the countless victims of conflict and violence around the world. With rising levels of violence and frequent violations of international humanitarian law, 2024 has proven to be a particularly deadly year for humanitarian workers.
We honor the memory of those we have lost and urgently call on leaders to put an end to these violations and the impunity that surrounds them. The ongoing failure to address these issues represents a profound lapse in humanity, collective responsibility, and leadership that must not continue.
Let this day remind us of our shared responsibility to uphold the principles of humanity and international humanitarian law, ensuring that those who work to alleviate human suffering can do so safely and effectively.
