Mr. György Busztin, was the guest speaker at New York University's Model United Nations (NYUMUN)
On Tuesday, 2 May 2017, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq for Political and Electoral Affairs, Mr. György Busztin, was the guest speaker at New York University's Model United Nations (NYUMUN), as part of the university's Discussion with a Global Leader series. An arena for discussion, a community for all, NYUMUN is one of New York University's largest and most prestigious student organizations.
With his presentation entitled "Iraq at Crossroads", DSRSG Busztin acquainted NYU students, faculty and guests on Iraq's rich history dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia and cradle of civilization, and highlighted the fact that Iraq today is dotted by ancient archeological sites, from Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian times to the Medieval Arab heritage. DSRSG Busztin gave insight to the work and mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and Iraq's recent history dating back to the 16th Century under the Ottoman Empire to British rule until independence in 1932. He touched upon regional and internal political upheavals, the country's fight against terrorism and weeding Daesh from its land, thus culminating in his lively and interactive discussion with the audience on the current political situation in Iraq.
On the humanitarian front, DSRSG Busztin also shed light on the plight of the millions of Iraqis affected by the war on terrorism. He expressed hope that the fight against Daesh will soon be over, but noted in despair that the humanitarian crisis in Iraq would unfortunately continue until all the displaced return home to rebuild their lives and communities.
At the end of his presentation, DSRSG Busztin welcomed an open question and answer session with interested students and members of the audience.
In thanking DSRSG Busztin for his participation in the Discussion with a Global Leader series, Ms. Grace Lubin of NYUMUN expressed the students’ deep appreciation for the opportunity to learn from and engage with DSRSG Busztin. "The students of New York University were so impressed and interested by the words and experience that you were able to share with them, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to host you", Ms. Lubin said.
