SRSG Condemns Hilla Terrorist Bombing Targeting Civilians: Such Cowardly Attacks by Daesh Will Not Stop Iraqi Drive to Liberate its Territory from the Terrorists

٢٤ تشرینی دووەم ٢٠١٦

Baghdad, Iraq, 24 November 2016 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubiš, condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist truck bombing near the City of Hilla in the Governorate of Babylon in southern Iraq today which killed or wounded scores of innocent people, many of them reportedly returning from pilgrimage to Karbala.

The SRSG expresses condolences to the families of those killed and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

“This cowardly suicide attack is deliberately aimed at exacting maximum casualties among civilians. Many of the victims were pilgrims returning from the Arbaeen commemoration in the City of Karbala”, Mr. Kubiš said.

The bombing underscores the importance of the ongoing fight against Daesh in the north of Iraq to liberate Mosul and Ninewa.

“The more Daesh feels cornered on the frontlines the more they may seek to avenge their losses with attacks against unarmed civilians. Such despicable acts by Daesh will not stop Iraq’s determined drive to liberate its territory from the terrorists”, Mr. Kubiš added.
