Security Council discusses situation in Iraq

Baghdad, 12 November 2015 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubiš, presented to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday the Report of the Secretary-General on the situation in Iraq, pursuant to Security Council Resolution number 2233 of 2015; and the Report of the Secretary-General on issue of missing Kuwaiti and third country nationals and property, pursuant to Security Council Resolution number 2107 of 2013.
Following the discussion, the President of the Security Council, Ambassador Peter Wilson of the United Kingdom said that the Council had met and discussed the situation in Iraq and expressed its support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.
The Council has likewise expressed support for the reforms of Prime Minister Abadi. “There was Council support for efforts at reform and national reconciliation. These efforts are crucial for a successful campaign against ISIL, the urgency of which cannot be overstated”, the President of the Security Council said.
He mentioned wide concern about the humanitarian situation and continued lack of funding, in particular for internally displaced persons, who now number over 3 million.
He added that “there was strong support for work on stabilisation, decentralisation and anti-corruption.”
The President also spoke of supporting parties in the Kurdistan Regional Government to reach an agreement on the Presidency, based on democratic principles.
The President of the Security Council said that the Council welcomed the constructive relationship between Iraq and Kuwait.
