Baghdad, 8 February 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert, strongly condemned the assassination of a female election nominee, Suha Abdullah Jarallah, who was shot dead in Mosul, just before the electoral campaign is due to start.
The SRSG warned that such incidents cannot be tolerated. “Campaign violence in Iraq must not be allowed to intimidate candidates or interfere with the right of every Iraqi to exercise their vote”, he said, adding that the Iraqi people and candidates must be allowed to participate in the election process, undeterred by violence, harassment and intimidation.
